Both apps solve the same first problem: a script that scrolls at a fixed speed makes you chase it, so you look down and the viewer sees it. Both fix that by listening. PromptSmart calls its version VoiceTrack; Wispim calls it Voice mode. After that the two apps stop resembling each other almost completely. The choice comes down to how much software you want around the scrolling.
PromptSmart is sold as a system. Its site lists iOS and Android apps, a Studio Edition for Windows and macOS, a browser-based control room, remote control from a second device, cloud file sync and three paid tiers, with Enterprise quoted on request. Wispim is the opposite shape: one app, on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows. It has no account, shared web library or team features. It does one thing the suite does not do, and it leaves out a great deal the suite has. A separate browser teleprompter is available, but it does not sync with the app.

Their app records; Wispim stays off the camera
Almost every practical difference follows from one design decision. PromptSmart’s app is the thing you point at yourself. It prompts and it records, and its site puts 4K capture and PromptSmart+ wide-angle front and centre. That is tidy: one app, and one file at the end of it, which comes out of their recorder under the terms of the plan you are on.
Wispim never asks for that trade, because it never opens the camera. The script goes into a floating window over Camera, Instagram or TikTok, and the clip lands in that app with its own stabilisation and effects. What the trade does cost is the microphone: voice tracking keeps following while you record in Camera, Instagram and TikTok, all tested, and if another app does take the microphone, the text holds on the word you reached and a note says “Mic busy”. Wispim keeps asking for the microphone back and carries on from that word when it has it.
Where PromptSmart does more
Its site lists an Android app and a desktop Studio Edition for Windows and macOS, so a mixed-device team is served. Wispim covers the iPhone, the iPad, the Mac and a Windows PC, and its Android app is in closed testing. PromptSmart has a web control room, remote control and a Team plan it describes as suitable for small to mid-sized collaborative teamwork, so someone else can drive the prompter or push an edit while you talk. Wispim has no second screen and no server to push anything through. PromptSmart syncs scripts through the cloud from five storage services. Wispim Pro syncs as well, but only between your own iPhones and Macs, through your own iCloud. There is no folder to hand over and no server of ours in the path. Import of TXT, Markdown, PDF, DOCX and RTF is local and part of Pro. And its site says VoiceTrack needs no internet connection because audio is processed on the device. Wispim cannot make that claim for every language. On an iPhone, iPad or Mac, recognition runs on the device where your language supports it, and for the other languages the audio goes to Apple to be turned into text. On a Windows PC, recognition runs on the PC once the language’s speech model has downloaded. Microsoft online speech, which recognises speech over the internet, is optional and starts switched off.
What the table cannot show
Three Wispim details only show once you are reading. Following is word-level, so repeating a line scrolls back to it, and when you pause it waits. There is no 3-2-1 countdown in any mode. Every mode has a start delay instead, off or 5, 10 or 20 seconds, shown inside the floating window too so you can see it from a tripod, and after it Voice and Sound wait until you speak. The third is the reach of the language support, which matters for voice following if you present in something other than the big five.
Who should pick PromptSmart
Pick PromptSmart if you also work on Android; if a producer, a client or a co-host needs to see and change the script while you read it; if scripts live in a shared cloud folder that several people edit; if you want the prompter and the recorder to be one app with one file at the end; or if a no-internet guarantee for speech processing is a requirement you have to write down.
Wispim sits at the other end of that scale. It has no seats, no Control Room and no folder tree, and nothing of ours to sign into. What is left is your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows PC, the app you already open, and a script that keeps pace with your mouth in whatever language you speak it. PromptSmart is rarely the only name on a shortlist, though, and best teleprompter apps for iPhone in 2026 is where the rest of the field is, competitors included.
