A PromptSmart alternative built only for the iPhone
PromptSmart is a production suite — phone, desktop, browser, teams. Wispim is one small iPhone app that follows your voice and floats over the app you record with. Here is the difference, with their facts taken from their own site.
Both apps solve the same first problem: a script that scrolls at a fixed speed makes you chase it, so you look down and the viewer sees it. Both fix that by listening. PromptSmart calls its version VoiceTrack; Wispim calls it Voice mode. After that the two apps stop resembling each other almost completely, and the choice is not about which one scrolls better — it is about how much software you want around the scrolling.
PromptSmart is sold as a system. Its site lists iOS and Android apps, a Studio Edition for Windows and macOS, a browser-based control room, remote control from a second device, cloud file sync and per-seat plans up to Enterprise. Wispim is the opposite shape: one iPhone app, 1.8 MB to download, no account, no web side, no team anything. It does one thing the suite does not do, and it leaves out a great deal the suite has.

Whose recorder ends up holding your footage?
Almost every practical difference follows from one design decision. PromptSmart’s app is the thing you point at yourself — it prompts and it records, and its site puts 4K capture and PromptSmart+ wide-angle front and centre. That is tidy: one app, one file, one workflow, and the file comes out of their recorder under the terms of the plan you are on.
Wispim never asks for that trade, because it never opens the camera. The script goes into a floating window over Camera, Instagram or TikTok, and the clip lands in that app with its own stabilisation and effects. What the trade does cost is the microphone: voice tracking keeps following while you record in Camera, Instagram and TikTok, all tested, and if another app does take the microphone, Wispim switches to Constant on its own, tells you, and switches back when the microphone returns.
Where PromptSmart does more
Four things, and none of them is a nitpick. Its site lists an Android app and a desktop Studio Edition, so a mixed-device team is served and Wispim simply cannot help. It has a web control room, remote control and shared folders, so someone else can drive the prompter or push an edit while you talk — Wispim has no second screen and no server to push anything through. It syncs scripts through the cloud from five storage services; Wispim keeps scripts on the phone and imports PDF, Word and RTF locally as part of Pro. And its site says VoiceTrack needs no internet connection because audio is processed on the device. Wispim cannot make that claim for every language: recognition runs on your iPhone where your language supports it, and where it does not, iOS sends the audio to Apple to turn into text.
What the table cannot show
Two Wispim details only matter once you are actually reading. Following is word-level, so repeating a line scrolls back to it and pausing simply waits — there is no 3-2-1 countdown in Voice or Sound mode, because there is nothing to count down to; only Constant has a start delay, off or 5, 10 or 20 seconds, shown inside the floating window too so you can see it from a tripod. And the reach of the language support is the whole reason voice following is worth using at all if you present in something other than the big five.
Who should pick PromptSmart
Pick PromptSmart if you are not only on an iPhone; if a producer, a client or a co-host needs to see and change the script while you read it; if scripts live in a shared cloud folder that several people edit; if you want the prompter and the recorder to be one app with one file at the end; or if a no-internet guarantee for speech processing is a requirement you have to write down. Those are the cases a small single-purpose app cannot argue with.
Wispim sits at the far other end of that scale. No seats, no Control Room, no folder tree, no file to sync and nothing to sign into — one iPhone, the camera app you already open, and a script that keeps pace with your mouth in whatever language you speak it. PromptSmart is rarely the only name on a shortlist, though, and best teleprompter apps for iPhone in 2026 is where the rest of the field is, competitors included.
